TFTD~ Little Known Medical Tax Deductions Did you know there are several large ticket vehicle and household items that can be deducted from your Federal Income taxes If they are a medical necessity? These items must be directly related to your specific disability need. Many states also allow for the same deductions but youll need to check with an accountant/preparer to see if these are allowed in your state this year, or not. If youre remodeling or purchasing items to meet a specific accessibility need and can get a written physicians script for it you may be able to deduct it from your taxes if itemizing or using the long form. • Vehicle wheelchair lift conversions (NOT the vehicle, only the lift system and labor to install it) • Ramps into your home • ADA compliant doors and thresholds • Elevators • Wider, ADA approved, accessible doorways • Bathroom updates (toilets/commodes, specialized tubs and installations, non-skid flooring, ADA approved faucets, showers, etc.) • Paddle door handles. • Electronic door systems • Ceiling lifts • Specialized kitchen features. Lowered counters, specialized faucets, cook tops, sinks, specific appliances etc. • More ( see the IRS website and your state tax site for an updated list) Laws change frequently. Before making ANY of these deductions check with your tax accountant to ensure they are allowable expenses this year.
