TFTD~The All Powerful Secretary When it comes to school staff there is one person in the building more powerful than the Principal. That’s the school secretary! She is the one on the front lines who decides who gets to talk or meet with the principal, whose messages make it into his in-box, and informs parents if he is “in” or “out” at the moment. She’s also the one who has to deal with all the angry, whiney, desperate and demanding parents. When calling the main office, be polite! Develop a rapport with the secretary and other office staff. Ask about the photos of her children, her husband, and her dog Spot sitting on her desk. Let the secretary and office staffs know you appreciate all the hard work they do. When you’re buying teacher gifts at Christmas or the end of the year make sure the secretary and office staff is on your list, too. A good secretary can be your best ally or worst enemy. Treat them kindly.
