THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY – we can all get back to work now! Apart from India, the only other country I am comfortable taking the liberty to write about is Switzerland. Nearly the whole world professes democracy, flawed or otherwise, having acknowledged communism as a failed idea even as democratic socialism tries to preserve itself in some parts. But two countries that absolutely stand out in human values are Switzerland and surprise surprise the UK. Most countries don’t even have adequately thought out and well-formulated foreign policies and even in nations where it does exist, the assessment of international power play and relational dynamics is not well evaluated. Quite stunningly, two countries are outstanding exceptions in the world. My interest in Europe grew out of sheer curiosity at a time when Euro was in neo natal stage, many called it premature, in any event, requiring tender nurturing. Eventually my interest expanded to include various other aspects of the EU as I watched with a fascination quite unconcealed but one which the Europeans found equally surprising coming from an Asian. As I ventured into discovering Europe at various strata from minimum wage earners to the upper most decision making echelons, I was enamoured with what even a wee bit of ferreting can bring to surface, quite frequently even to the extent of myth busters and often enough eye openers.
