THANK YOU, SLIM WHITMAN: Folks may not know this, but Slim Whitman is almost single-handedly responsible for the birth of 24-hour news. I was one of the original Senior Producers of CNN. When Ted Turner put that network on cable in 1980 he did it with few viewers or advertisers. Enter, Slim Whitman. CNN ran commercials for his compilation of music repeatedly and endlessly. In nearly every commercial break, as producers, anchors, writers, directors, editors, talent & crew prepared for the next segment, we could hear Slim yodeling away.
