THANKSGIVING - HE KEEPS BLESSING US…. It had been a hard winter in the Appalachian area. The snow had piled up deeper and deeper, the mercury dropped, rivers froze, people suffered. The Red Cross used helicopters to fly in supplies. One crew had been working day after day--long hours. They were on their way home late in the afternoon when they saw a little cabin submerged in the snow. There was a thin whisper of smoke coming from the chimney. The rescue team figured they were probably about out of food, fuel, perhaps medicine. Because of the trees they had to put the helicopter down a mile away. They put on heavy packs with emergency supplies, trudged through heavy snow, waist deep, reached the cabin exhausted, panting, perspiring. They pounded on the door. A thin, gaunt mountain woman opened the door and the lead man gasped, Were from the Red Cross. She was silent for a moment and then she said, It’s been a hard winter, Sonny; I just dont think we can give anything this year. How many times has God wanted to and tried to bless your life and you have missed what he was doing? How many times has God blessed you in you life and you just didnt see it, until perhaps later? Have you ever been at a point in your life, where you feel all alone, rejected by the world and like no one really cares? Let me explain why that sometimes happens. First and foremost reason is what God tells us about Satan being like a roaring lion, sneaking around our lives, looking for ways to take us down in life. That is his purpose; that is what he does best. The question though is what can we do about it? First, we need to remember one of the most encouraging passages for those who are struggling is where Jesus says, Come to me, all you who are troubled and weighted down with care, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 BBE) Second we need to count our blessings and be thankful to God for all we have. Someone shared the thought with me that no matter what happens in your life; you should be thankful that you are not a Turkey on Thanksgiving. Paul reminds Christians in Colossians 4:2 to: Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Thanksgiving is a very important part of every Christians life. It is what we should be doing everyday, but especially during this season of family gathering together. Just being with family and friends is in itself a wonderful blessing for which to be thankful. The turkey and the trimmings are just the setting for sharing in something much more important. Lets not forget to have a thankful heart and do some real Thanksgiving this day!
