THE 101 st EDITION OF “THE fd ZONE” ! (PART VI) This week we bring to FD Zone a film that agitates against the familiar categories of documentary, fiction and biography. Amit Duttas film, Nainsukh, seeks the continuity between film and painting. He states in one interview that film cannot be merely the tool to document painting and other arts. His attempt has always been to engage with an artists work through the language of cinema. In Nainsukh, the director tries to imagine the paintings as the location for the unfolding of the painters life. Shot in the sites where the painter lived and worked, Amit Dutta masterfully recreates the painters compositions using the tools of cinema- light, sound, actors, space moving through time. There is a meditative quality to the manner in which the filmmaker unfolds the details of each composition before allowing the viewer to get the complete picture. Often the unveiling, as it were, creates a drama that is unexpected. It is exciting for us, his contemporaries, to confront Amit Duttas formal and aesthetic explorations through his body of work, but especially in this much feted and acclaimed film, Nainsukh. Programme: Nainsukh 2010/ 90mins/ Dogri with English subtitles Nainsukh (c. 1710 - 1778) was trained in a traditional Pahari painters family-workshop at Guler in todays Kangra District (H.P.) and became the major retained artist at the court of Jasrota (J&K). Famous for his intimate, well observed and precise, sometimes humorous, often somewhat enigmatic, always sensitively drawn pictures, especially of his long-time patron Balwant Singh, Nainsukh is today considered the most extraordinary Indian artist of his time. His biography and extensive oeuvre as researched and reconstructed by Prof. B. N. Goswamy has been the basis of the film Nainsukh . Produced by Dr. Eberhard Fischer Directed by Amit Dutta Camera: Mrinal Desai Editing: Amit Dutta, Eberhard Fischer Music: Dishari Chakraborty Cast: Manish Soni
