THE 2013 ITERATION OF PETE THE PANSTICK PETE the Panstick™ - TopicsExpress

THE 2013 ITERATION OF PETE THE PANSTICK PETE the Panstick™ (PETE) is a sophisticated, bilingual (Spanish and English) animated educator, conceptualised and created by Camille Selvon-Abrahams for Sanch Electronix. Using Information and Communications Technology (ICT), PETE introduces beginners to the fundamentals of Music Literacy, Technical English, ICT and Social Studies in conjunction with relevant, interesting cultural phenomena. The software was officially launched on 24th April, 2012 and has since been successfully piloted in a number of secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago. PETE is self-instructional, interactive, innovative, exciting and user-driven. No predetermined sequencing facilitates random navigation through the application, allowing users to peruse its contents at their leisure. The product will undergo systematic upgrades to animate all instruments of the Steelpan family, primarily facilitated through support from the Centre for Development of Enterprise (CDE), Virtual Educa and Republic Bank . Thus far, emphasis has been placed on teaching musical scales using the tenor Steelpan. Students may now use their own instrument to mimic twenty-four animated major and harmonic minor scales. Techniques illustrate which notes are usually played with the right or left hand and how to ‘roll’ on notes. Ten short movies embrace aspects of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture, including Parang, Pan & Tassa and Pan-Jazz. One is also exposed to Steelpan history and development, while copious notes complete one’s educational experience. The multiple-choice Quiz has been expanded to 140 questions with varying degrees of difficulty to challenge the intellectual capability of even the most seasoned Steelpan aficionados. The 2013 iteration of PETE is currently being incorporated into a Learning Management System to facilitate Pan in Education .This has been undertaken by the Distance-Learning Secretariat of the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST). The upgraded iteration will be available from the new academic year beginning next month as work continues apace on the next phase, animation of the double tenor Steelpan and lip synchronization for the Spanish menu.
