THE ALTERNATIVE RIVER GAMBIA The rains , are not forthcoming , what next? could the Mighty RIVER GAMBIA be an alternative for the people of the Gambia for agricultural productivity? I guess it could be . Currently, people of Nyakoi Taibatou village are harvesting rice which were sewn during the dry season. Do you think they should be worried much about the low rainfall received? It is true that what they are producing now is on a very small scale and this could be attributed to the use of various inferior agricultural tools. These people are faced with huge challenges particularly water supply to irrigate rice fields {BANTA FAROS} which lie hundreds of meters away from the main source of water. These people rely on a frequently maintenanced pumping machine the health of which continues to be dilapidated and deplorable over time , However, they continue managing with this until they are able to harvest their crops. The cost of maintenance of the pumping machine, the ploughing , fuel and fertilizers cost and they compensation for the operators are all incurred by they villagers themselves .But there is absolutely no regret in this hence they realize some thing for the families at the end of the day. I believe these people are responding to the call of the central Government in its quest to achieving food security in this Great country the Gambia. We appreciate the efforts of the Government in this respect. In addition, we are equally challenging all other stakeholders particularly the International Community and the specialized Agencies of the UNO to come to the plights of the people of Nyakoi Taibatou and the surroundings with a view to empowering and assisting them in these great endeavors.You will be astonished by all indications to know that the women folks are in the forefront in this crusade.Let me tell you, this does not stop the from performing their household duties unlike their male counterparts. land is not a constrain in case some one wants to question. The whole of Nyakoi are abundantly blessed with vast land area containing clay- loamy soil ideal for rice cultivation. The advantages in these are not only for self reliance in food security, also it will serve as one of the mechanisms to curtail the number of youths trying to ply the Mediterranean sea into mainland Europe to become indenture servants. Besides, the number of school drop out could be averted to a very large degree. In addition, the youths shall become self - employed with dignities, respect and independence in their own land instead of becoming servitudes elsewhere. We do not have to blame any body for the drastic drop in amount of rainfall , patterns and distribution but ourselves.The altruism is that man first disappointed the natural environment by tempering with its constitutes . In revenge, the environment also punished man by dropping the amount of rains supplied annually. So , we have a choice and that is , either to stop indiscriminate and unnecessary clearing of the natural habitats or face the full fledged of the law of nature. If we insist , then , let us use the alternative River Gambia to solve our predicaments.
