THE ANCYL in Durban said it wants four MECs to be selected from the youth if the party wins the province. It announced this in Durban yesterday while welcoming and showing off celebrities who are backing the ruling party. Dressed in ANC colours, Bafana Bafana star Andile Jali was at the centre of the stage. Alongside Jali was kwaito star L’vovo, DJ Merlon, DJ Sox, DJ Masiya and Orlando Pirates star on loan to Lamontville Golden Arrows, Manti Moholo. Jali said he would devote his time to campaign for the ANC when he came home from Belgium in April. “We are role models to many young people. If we support the ruling party the youth will follow us,” he said. L’vovo said he was by no means a new member of the ANC. Amanda Bani, KZN ANCYL chairwoman, said they didn’t set out to recruit stars. “They came to us and said they were keen to be part of the progressive movement and we welcomed them,” she said. Thanduxolo Sabela, regional secretary, said: “We’ve told President Zuma that comrade Senzo Mchunu should continue as a premier. He is competent and far sighted.” This comes after Mchunu came second on the provincial candidate list. By: MENZI JELE, WELLEM PHUNGULA and LINDA XIMBA
