THE ARTICLE THAT LAUNCHED NORA AUNOR Not many people know who wrote the first article on the girl who became superstar Nora Aunor. It appeared in June 1967 in the small weekly magazine of the Manila Chronicle, written by a cub reporter covering sports and contributing to the entertainment guide to supplement his meager daily minimum wage income. The writer got to see (not meet) Nora when she had already become a superstar only twice when she was a guest at the National Press Club. Some years later, he had a fleeting (more like fleeing) encounter with her at a beach in La Union. Nora was a virtual unknown, just a 4 9 wisp of a lass, everyones image of a high school girl from the provinces visiting the big city for the first time. The writer had gone to MBC to interview actor Fred Montilla and while they were waiting in the wings chatting, a name was called, a girl came on stage and introduced as the winner of the Tawag ng Tanghalan national singing contest a few evenings previously, and ... a legend was launched. (Nora then had introduced herself as Aunor and the woman with her as her mother Belen Aunor. Later, under public scrutiny, it turned out her family name was Villamayor and Belen was her aunt with whose family she grew up at Nichols (now Villamor) Air Base in Pasay City.) *** pelikulaatbp.blogspot/2013/06/riding-moonbeam-to-fame_29.html
