THE AS JUST WON THE PENNANT yesterdays trade for Samardzija was a holy SHIT. flamethrower S. has been pitching lights out at Wrigley Field since opening day this year, and now will be pitching in one of the best pitchers parks in all of baseball ( = giant foul area, for starters). and with the highest run-scoring team (so far) in baseball putting runs up for him. WERE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES, BABY. as long as someone else takes out the Tigers in the playoffs first round. and yeah its the As best W - L start since 1989!! -- that being the last year the team got to (and won) the World Series. and yeah the As at midseason have been the best team in the American League, hands down -- but the red-hot Angels staying right there in striking distance, like.3 or 4. games out for weeks now -- had to be a factor in the As going beYOND all in, this year. if the playoffs started today in fact, both ALwild card teams would be from the As division, the AL West -- SEATTLE has the best record in the league since june 1st! yep, Oakland and the Angels and Seattle have the three best W/L records in the AL right now (and the As in all of baseball, for a couple weeks now). Samardzijas contract that comes over with him is for $5.3M this year (prorated) and again for next year 2015. (after which he hits free agency). a BARGAIN (good starting pitchers go for $10M a year, or more). the bonus of the trade (the second starting pitcher acquired, Hamels, has been having a strong year, which means that Tommy Milone (6 - 0 with an ERA < under 3.00 in his last elevent starts) and Jesse Chavez may be taking turns on the Sacramento / Oakland (right now its Milone, even though hes been one of the best starting LHPs in the american league over his last eleven starts, 6 - 0 with an ERA under 3.00) -- oh yeah, the AWESOME bonus to the trade is that $10M total bust (as closer) jim johnson should be bye bye the minute the As can get a bag of used postage stamps for him. (his As predecessor Grant Balfour has been even worse at Tampa Bay, and also lost his own $10M a year closers job)..
