THE AUSTIN EPADI-IGBUKU LIGHTS ON FOUNDATION 2014 AWARD CEREMONY For any nation to be great and transformed the youths who are seen as the leaders of tomorrow must have a sound and developed mindset. One major means to achieving this is via education, where appropriate competences, skills and abilities are developed, horned and tested. The Austin Epadi-Igbuku lights on foundation a non-governmental organization recognizes the need to empower young ones, enhance the educational environment, provide them with tools and resources to aid their study life and motivate them through financial awards to aid their studies. This is why since its conception in 2009, The Austin Epadi-Igbuku Lights on Foundation has continued to promote academic excellence of secondary school students through award of scholarship, sponsorship and award recognition of excellence both in character and academically. The foundation is committed to youth educational empowerment for better leadership and national excellence with particular focus on the Isoko youths. This year’s award ceremony just like the previous ones came with cash prizes and commemorative certificates for both students and teachers who apart from teaching the students were able to develop student-teacher relationship and have become builders and life changers. The 6th award ceremony of the Austin Epadi-Igbuku lights on Foundation kicked off in grand style in Aviara Secondary Commercial School in Aviara, Delta State on Friday the 12th of December, 2014. The event that took place in the assembly arena of ASCS Aviara attracted dignitaries from all works of life including the Commissioner for Education, Delta State; Zonal Chief Inspector of Education, Post primary board executives, members of the academia, industrialists, public and private schools, non-governmental organizations, as well as community leaders. A total of 31 awards were made to various students and teachers from the invited schools, the awards ranged from, best behaved students in all of the 12 schools (Aviara Secondary Commercial School, Adams Memorial College Araya, Abiogu Secondary School Ewhokpaka, Uzere Grammar school Uzere, Emede Grammar School, Enwhe Secondary School, Igbide Grammar School, Irri Grammar School, Uro Grammar School, Iyede Secondary Schools and Oyede Comprehensive high school) invited, to the overall best in mathematics, english, literature, economics, science, best female student. The presentation was colourful and exciting. The overall best winner was Edhere Priscella Oromena from Oyede Comprehensive High School, she had a total of 8 credits The foundation also commissioned two water projects in Aviara Secondary Commercial School, one to serve the principal and teachers quarter, the other to serve the Corpers Lodge. The components of the water projects include two water bore holes, two - 2,500 litre capacity tanks, two tank stands and replacement of all plumbing materials and fittings in the principal’s house and the Corpers lodge. The facilities were commissioned by the Commissioner of Education Delta State. A special lecture on “developing a successful Career among secondary school student in Nigeria: A genetic or environmental factors” was delivered by Dr. Ochuko Ushurhe, Delta State Institute of Continuing Education, Ozoro. Also there was an oral English speaking competition amongst invited schools. Students randomly picked one topic from the basket , which was discussed in 3minutes. Topics discussed ranged from Culture, Technology, Communication, Politics and Leadership. The students demonstrated a great sense of passion on their selected themes and expressively discussed them to the best of their abilities. At the end, the winner who was judged in terms of composure, clarity, good command of spoken English/diction and the understanding of the given topic went home with handsome cash reward, leadership book and a commemorative certificate. The students were motivated and like some said, come 2015, I shall be the one to win that prize Finally, the foundation provided free medical for community members for ailments such as malaria, fever, rheumatism, cough and cold and free medical test for blood sugar, high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, HIV etc. The Principal of the host school – Mr Isaac Ighravwe was very appreciative of the Foundations contribution to the Community and also to Education in General. He also extended his thanks to all who participated in this rich event as they have touched the lives of the students by giving them new hope in pursuing their education.
