THE AUSTRALIAN BUREAU of statistics recently released its preliminary statistics on the number of suicides in Australia during 2012. The figure was 2535.. That is approximately seven suicides every day, or 49 per week. And approximately 62,000 Australians a year attempt to take their lives. Think of the MCG filled to almost two-thirds of its capacity. Suicide was the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. Put that against the 1310 Australians who lost their lives on the roads in 2012 and the 260 who lost their lives through acts of violence in 2010. Outside of ageing, disease and illnesses, more people in Australia die each year by their own hand than by any other means. And the number of suicides in 2012 was higher than the year before.
