THE BACKYARD CHEF - THE REVIEW The Backyard Chef is a fairly new restaurant that opened in Uttara sector 3. As The Food Gurus heard good things about this place, we decided we should check it out for dinner one day. On being satisfied, we went back again another day. This review puts together both our experiences and the positives and negatives of both. The Place: The Backyard Chef is located on one of Uttara’s most notable roads – Rabindra Sarani. The restaurant takes up the second floor of its building. On entering, we saw that the place was large enough to accommodate quite a large number of people. There was an option of sitting in a booth or on normal tables and chairs. A calming yellowish hue of the lighting encompassed the whole restaurant. However I noticed that the décor was very plain and nothing in the restaurant really stood out or impressed me much. Anyway, we quickly sat down in a booth and placed our order. The Food: On the first day we ordered a Teriyaki Chicken Burger (400tk) and an Egg and Cheese Panini – Double Size (360tk). Both orders came with a side of fries and dipping sauce. The burger was incredible and the slightly sweet teriyaki sauce used tasted like original Japanese sauce and went well with the soft chicken meat. The meat was cooked to tender perfection and I have no complaint about the burger. The Panini was nice and soft just like a panini should be with egg and cheese forming a neat succulent layer between the 2 slices of bread. Together with drinks, the 2 dishes were good enough to fill up both me and Shadmani. For drinks we ordered an Iced White Mocha (260tk) and a Passion Pineapple Mocktail (240tk). The chilled white mocha was very refreshing but was probably not the best choice to accompany my burger as there was a slight clash in sweetness, however that was my fault and the drink itself was good. The Passion Pineapple Mocktail however tasted too citrusy and sweet and was not a great combination of flavors, it was very hard to drink and it left a rather unpleasant taste in our mouths. On the second day I ordered a Chicken Teriyaki platter (740tk). This dish had tender strips of chicken drowned in their delicious teriyaki sauce and served with a (heart shaped) serving of fried rice and some spinach. Once again the teriyaki chicken did not fail me and I greatly enjoyed the chicken strips with the helping of rice, and the whole meal was enough to fill me up. I also ordered a Strawberry Iced Tea (140tk) to go with my meal. Here is where one of the few negatives of the restaurant plays in – the hygiene. When I was served my iced tea, Shadmani noticed a small hair on the inside edge of the glass – halfway in the drink and half way out. However on showing this to the waiter he promptly apologized and brought me a new (hopefully) drink within a few minutes. The flavors of the strawberry and iced tea were both detected in the drink which rekindled my respect for iced tea (after Café Hollywood ruined it) and the drink was overall very pleasant. The Service and Cleanliness: The waiters were very helpful and understanding and seemed to know how to go about their business. When I showed them the hair they didn’t hesitate to apologize and change the drink for me (at least I hope they changed it). The restaurant was generally well kept and the food seemed hygienic. The only negative was the hair I found which is unacceptable as the waiters or food preparers should make sure there is no fault in the food and drinks they are serving. Luckily however, the problem was solved. The bathroom also seemed generally well kept and tidy. The Pricing: The overall pricing seemed rather appropriate, except they probably should have given more chicken strips and rice in the Teriyaki meal for that price. I have no complaints about the price of the other food and drinks and The Backyard Chef seemed pretty affordable to me. Overall: I would have to say I was pleasantly satisfied with The Backyard Chef. The food was delicious and well prepared and the drinks were good as well (except for the Pineapple Passion). The service was quite professional and they quickly handled any problems we had. I would definitely go back to The Backyard Chef to try their other food as they have not failed to impress my thus far.
