THE BANE (SERIES): EPISODE ONE: THE CINEMA Chidi sighed, rushing the last gulp of Whiskey,it vehemently burnt through his chest as it glided down. It really suited the cold weather at that moment. “so what next after university?” he spoke softly, filling up his mug this time with cold chilled beer. “having a first degree doesn’t really matter nowadays, okwa ima? Said Chuks, refilling his own gaint beer mug “so?’ quizzed chidi. “ we need to further immediately” his younger brother cut in sharply. “alright” he nodded, in conccurence. Even at evenings, the sun seemed to be hot and shinny in the city of Abuja. The wind was no joke, blowing ferrociously with vector, wasnt smiling from one region to the other, strongly and fiercely, plucking off leaves from big perennial trees, littering the whole sorroundings waywardly. Though, the aftermath of the wind was always soothing, leaving fine grains of dry sandy soil on the earth with almost no pebble on sight. The air continued to be thin, with no humidity, making breath refreshing and chilly. The twins, all kitted up in a sporting attire, sorely ready for the evenings soccer showpiece headed straight to the Olympic standard stadium. Chidi, who was six hours older than Chuks, had stronger athletic legs, ran faster, jumped higher than his younger brother. Though, chuks was much more a completely skilled football player than he was. His pace and dashing ability made him the best dribbler during his secondary school days. The soccer showpiece ended well in favour of the home team. Chidi starred, marshalling the defence and was fondly called The Beijin Wall. Chuks, though, wasn’t on the scoresheet but was still the Man of The Match after ranking up the assist chart with three and orchestrated the two other goals. “brilliant performance from the twins” remarked their coach, A well rounded middle aged man. “thanks sir” they chorused with excitement, giggling in unism. “its almost quarter past seven, we need to hurry up so we could catch a better space at the cinema” chuks reminded in a murmuring manner. “Am almost done. Really cant afford to miss any part of that scintillating new movie MISFIT” chidi reprimanded. “ oh yeah! Me too. Who is even starring?” Chucks enquired. “ha! You don’t know? “ “yes I don’t at all o” “It’s the award winning and fast rising nollywood actress, Ijeoma Grace Agu” “wow! You don’t mean it. I love that lady. Ever since I watched her in Hoodrush, Iredi and her one-man show, Chronicles of Heroines. I knew she’d be successful”. He smiled. “I wonder what it takes to be free?” “Really? Lets go and know then, hurry up, inugo?” Chidi grinned sheepishly. They both chuckled and made funny utterances to one another before setting out for the cinema, sweetly dressed and nicely perfumed, the fragrance of their cheap cologne filling the entire street as they walked by. **** **** **** Their life was more of friendship than brotherhood. They were ideally perfect friends, sharing common ideas, excelling at the same rate, helping each other uniformly no matter the condition. The love was strong, the bond grew even stronger and stronger. Even being away from their parents since they graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, with astonishing second class upper and first class respectively from same department. Everything about them was very identical, surprisingly, except for one thing, their facial appearance. They were fraternal! “Excuse me miss, anyone here?” chidi spoke flatly to the skinny woman on a purple off-shoulder gown staring at the screen. “no mister!”, she said calmly, pouting her lips to one corner, her jaw, making a curve and her fierce lashes, which looked more like that of a carribean witch, flashing. Chidi got stunned. Her beauty was astonishing, he hadn’t seen such before, maybe never. Her simple words had swept him off his feet. Immediately. “T-T-T-Thanks” he stuttered, managing just a few words. She kept her cool, she said nothing in return. Only but a smile. A weak one. then he sat next to her with no further words. “Hi miss” Chuks greeted, offering her a bowl full of Coloured popcorn. “no thanks!”. Then he insisted after some persistence, she finally yielded and took a handful. She looked at him keenly, one more time, to be sure, because he seemed familiar. “I think I know you-u-u but… In sudden curiousity, his head tilted towards her, she perceived the scent of his masculine aftershave. It instantly rang a bell. “arent you Chuks John, first class honours, computer engineering UNN?”. Head held high, mountains raised and collar popped up he replied with utmost pleasurable grin. “oh yes i am”. She smiled thinly, revealing her parallel snow white dentition “Im Ezinne. Ezinne Akudo. Graduate of philosophy UNN.” She said afterwards. “Oh the beauty queen of our days. I remember the name vividly. Nice meeting you. He chuckled faintly “its my pleasure. And he is? Bringing out her slim palms for a formal handshake. She felt the imprint of his gentle touch on her soft subtle flesh after the shake. “Oh hes my twin brother! Chidi”. Chidi kept his attention on the movie. His heart was burning, churning and rumbling, solely wishing he was the one in chidi’s shoes. He was an introvert. A Chronic one. And that remained his problem. At the other hand, chuks was opposite, an exceptional orator and a complete extrovert. Chuks kept his stare on her as they kept conversing. He was attractive himself. She felt his gaze on her face and she lifted her glass again. “you’re beautiful Ezinne. E maka zi kwa”. She laughed, Though, at his igbotic intonation. “thank you” was all she said. The night grew old, as a blanket of gross darkness covered the entire Cinema. As the movie went on, Ezinne kept laughing and smiling and laughing, involuntarily resting her head on his firm shoulders. She was clearly enjoying his company. Chidi offered no words throughout. He plied all his focus on the screen. He was isolated. Before they had vacated the cinema, Ezinne and Chuks had both exchanged contacts, but not only that, they had kissed! Everything seem to be happening too fast and right before Chidi. Poor Chidi. But in clear conscience, he knew he shouldn’t be jealous of his brother. Though, it was inevitable, he tried to supress it. He shouldn’t let her be the bane between them. Sincerely, He loved Chuks. Very well, he was sure he did. He loved their peace but then, Ezinne? He admired and cherished her secretly. A beauty to behold. A paragon of beauty. Skin deep, uniformly complexioned, well mounted hips, fully breasted, straight legs. Words out of words, She was charming. Damn it! He thought silently to himself! It was all complicated, because he let his inocous emotions gradualy take control of him. Now the mantle of choice and preference had befallen him. He’d to pick one: the twin, the peace or the bane! COMING SOON:..... EPISODE 2: SHORTRUN MON, 4TH NOV, 2013! Dnt miss!
