THE BAT TOWER – on Lower Sugarloaf Key - Images from our Florida Road Trip Richter Clyde Perky of Denver was an early real estate investor in Sugarloaf Key. The 1920s the Florida Land Boom was booming and Perky saw Sugarloaf as a vacation paradise. But the mosquitoes were so bad, he feared the tourists would stay away. Perky heard that bats eat lots of mosquitoes, so he hired Fred Johnson of Key West to build this enormous tower to attract bats. It is 50 feet high and has four wooden shingled sides standing on concrete pillars. When no bats were attracted to the structure, Perky brought in 1,000 bats from New Jersey. The Key West High school band assembled with local dignitaries on the first evening, awaiting the bats to awake at sunset. Sure enough, at sunset the bats awoke, flew off, and never returned. Perkys real estate ambitions were never fully realized, but this 90-year-old folly still remains. #FLXmasRoadtrip
