THE BEACH REPORT, # 4 Something like : the older one gets the more remembering of ones past --the life ones lived & the time that is the past parallel with the current. Tortoise-like, holding the whole shebang, naturally, --tandem of past & current, --but an effort it is, sometimes, to inhabit the present without consciousness drifting in analogy & comparison to the past life that still holds imagination & emotion --emotion, it seems, newly stimulated by memory, engenders experience in & between the life of these lives, the lives of this life… What of the current? Right now a white streak -- seagull in wave skimming flight, drawing a line behind me where Im standing breast high in water facing the beach, between me & a gleaming white schooner moored in the bay --hilarious memory immediately of Bukowskis crew debauching behind their captains back aboard his floating den! Standing in my skin as they say, nothing else --sense of weight shed, & age --now merman on the sand, drawn into watching the arriving & withdrawing sea… Right now when not immersed in the gentlest sea, its Miller ca 1940 who suffuses me, lending me barrel loads of the excitement of one sufficiently released from responsibility as to conduct his own trial of nationality, universality, human priority. Acquitted of solipsism & rank egotism (as at the start of the story he excused his mentor, Seferiss friend Katsimbalis), Miller pleads guilty to a mature innocence, crazier in this time of total information, thus pro rata culpability, in every iniquity. It equates to freedom : the crazy freedom, freedom of the crazy man, crazy cock, & the crazy cock crow a la Durrells letter describing Katsimbaliss shockingly fantastical cock-a-doodle-dooing which wakes all the cockerels of Athens… The mature & innocent freedom of yes & no… no real contempt in Millers nay-saying, which can only be the democratic way. And pray & pray, for havent we learnt that what will be will be… [[26/27-1-14]
