THE BEAUTIFUL ‘SEPTARIAN NODULES’ A ‘Septarian Nodule’ is a special kind of concretion that is said to contain seven (Latin ‘septa’/ ‘septam’; Sanskrit ‘saptam’) fractures, invariably in every direction, later filled-up by minerals. It is also known as Dragon Stone, Septarian Tumbled Stone, and Turtle Stone. These vary in shape, hardness and size, ranging from objects requiring magnifying lens to be visible, to huge bodies upto 3 m in diameter, and are reported from many countries e.g. USA (Texas, Utah, Dakota), Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, England, Japan, India, Belgium, Morocco, Jamaica, Madagascar, etc. The Septarians are comprised of calcite (yellow centre), aragonite or siderite (brown linings) and outer grey rock, normally limestone. Rarely barite, quartz, pyrite and marcasite alongwith their alteration products, whewellite, analcime, gypsum are also seen in the nodules. Occasionally the fossil which started the formation of rock is also noticeable. The process of formation of Septarian nodules is still not well understood. Various mechanisms are subscribed for the development of fractures or open spaces and later filling-up by minerals. Decomposing sea life killed by volcanic eruptions, had a chemical attraction for the sediment around them, forming mud balls. When the ocean receded, the balls were left to dry and crack. Because of their bentonite content they shrank at the same time trapping the cracks inside. Decomposed calcite from the shells was carried down into the cracks of mud balls and calcite crystals developed. A thin wall of calcite is transformed into aragonite separating the bentonite exteriors from calcite centers. The beautiful interior design of a ‘Septarian Nodule’ makes it worth possession. As it combines all the metaphysical properties of the minerals that make it up, it is considered extremely powerful as a ‘healing stone’.
