THE BIG MOVIE MAGIC REVIEW 2014: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Set 10 years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction from a deadly virus, a group of survives led by Gary Oldman attempt to send a team into ape territory on a mission to turn the power back on. Luckily the story doesnt strain with the fact that its a follow up, it could quite easily of been a stand alone, the virus that was established towards the end of Dawn is only briefly mentioned within the movies opening credits and although its presence is felt throughout the movie it doesnt bag it down. The stars of the film has to go to the special effects and Andy Serkis in particular who demonstrates great skill in performing ape like movements. Watching the bad apes grab a machine gun and going trigger happy is a delight and despite being on the wrong side you do end up cheering them. Human cruelness to these wonderful creatures is a returning theme, with the matter of trust the central running theme of the movie. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell co- star however it certainly wont be these youll be watching. There are a few continuity scenes, like Caesar returning home, now an empty shell, but the movie stands proud and apart but is setting up a powerful next chapter in the Planet of the Apes series, and the next one going by this will be something spectacular indeed. 4/5
