THE BRAMPTON UNIVERSITY ....THAT NEVER WAS: Brampton politicians knew in 2013 that the Provincial was planning to invite application from Cities for a new University. However No serious effort was made by the Brampton Mayor and City Council in period 2013 -2014 to search and qualify partners for the proposed University in Brampton. The Brampton City Council SLEPT while other competing Municipalities were in talks with various Universities. They were successful in clinching agreements with e.g Laurentian-Barrie; McMaster-Burlington; Wilfred Laurier-Milton., York University has also issued a proposal call for university expansion in the Region of York only. By the time time the City Staff , in compliance of Council Resolution 2 April 2014, started contacting over telephone (sic !!) various Universities ( no letters were dispatched, no presentations were made, no delegates were nominated to talk to all Universities), it was already TOO LATE. The EXCUSE Brampton city staff gave for not making all out efforts to reach out to various Universities is interesting and is as follows: a) This Council resolution didnt reference a letter campaign specifically. Rather, contact with universities was made through various ways, including one-one one calls. b) Besides these Universities Laurentian, McMaster, Wilfred Laurie, York who had already finalized agreements with other cities, City staff further approached University of Toronto, Ryerson and Algoma Universities, respectively, for possible expansion. These institutions indicated they were not considering expansion at this time. No other Ontario universities are responding to the Provinces call for expansion proposals, for which Brampton could be a host municipality. It was in these DESPERATE circumstances, that Brampton City Council, roped in two private individuals working in other universities and partnered into a agreement with them. This was done with great fanfare and presented to the people as a great political victory . As expected the proposal was rejected , as it violated the provincial norms (no individual can partner). I am reproducing these sequence of events, so that the citizens can be aware about the conduct in City Hall of our Mayor and Councillors . This city council JUST DOES NOT CARE. This City council has failed on all fronts. Its about time we took stock of the situation and elect suitable well educated, outspoken, pushing City Council and Mayor, who can better represent us.
