‘THE CENTER OF GREENFIELD’: MCDONALD’S WILL ANCHOR RETAIL DEVELOPMENT IN GREENFIELD The golden arches are coming to Greenfield. Richard Groff of Team Development, a Louisiana-based retail developer, made the announcement earlier today during the monthly meeting of Greenfield’s board of mayor and aldermen. “Yes, McDonald’s is coming,” he said. “We have a fully executed lease with McDonald’s.” McDonald’s will be the anchor tenet in a retail development called “The Center of Greenfield,” which will be located at the northwest corner of West Main and Meridian (Highway 45). The site is currently occupied by a closed service station and is across the street from Little General. The development will be about 6,800 square feet initially and could expand up to about 10,000 square feet in the future. “The site that we have been focused on is my dear friend Elgie Flowers’ property,” Groff said. “In addition, we’ve also gotten under contract with Mary Akin, who owns the Victorian home directly behind that closed service station. That allows us to have a nice rectangular-shaped property from which to lay out a shopping center.” The announcement brought into public light what had been an ultra secretive project nearly a year in the making. It was so sensitive even some board members were caught off guard by the announcement. “Very few of you know about this because, unfortunately, when we’re dealing with national tenants we have to be very careful and quite about what our intentions are, otherwise the old adage ‘loose lips sink ships’ comes into play and then we have to move on the next spot,” Groff said. “Fortunately, we’ve gotten to a point in this community that we feel very comfortable bringing before you this project.” Groff estimated the new McDonald’s would employ 25-30 people. “This will look and feel just like a regular McDonald’s that you would see anywhere else. The only difference is that it’s about 400-square feet smaller than one you would see down in Jackson or the one in Milan. It will have a double drive-through.” The McDonald’s will be on one end of the shopping center. At least two additional tenets are being sought, Groff said Jim Blankenship, the assistant director of the West Tennessee Industrial Association, and Weakley County Economic Development Director Ronnie Price were both on hand for the announcement. “I appreciate everything that y’all have done,” said Mayor Cindy McAdams, speaking to Blankenship, Price and Groff. “Words cannot express what y’all have done. It will help us tremendously.” See Thursdays edition of The Press for more on this breaking announcement.
