THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE Almost 30 years ago, Whitney - TopicsExpress

THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE Almost 30 years ago, Whitney Houston belted out these lyrics for the first time in her chart-topping hit, “The Greatest Love of All”: I believe the children are our future / Teach them well and let them lead the way / Show them all the beauty they possess inside / Give them a sense of pride to make it easier. But in recent weeks, it is our children who have given us a sense of pride as they have shown a determination, spirit and resolve that defy their years. Today, I want to recognize Mo’ne Davis from South Philadelphia and the Jackie Robinson West (JRW) Little League team from the South Side of Chicago. First, 13-year-old Little League baseball pitcher Mo’ne Davis, who plays for Philadelphia’s Taney Dragons, captured the nation’s attention with a 70 mph fastball that left her competition - and spectators – in a daze. Becoming the first girl in Little League World Series (LLWS) history to throw a shutout, Mo’ne is literally changing the game and widely held perceptions of who can be successful at it. In addition, she threw a shutout in the Mid-Atlantic final that led her team to the LLWS, became only the 6th girl to score a hit in LLWS history and is only the 18th girl to ever play in the LLWS. Sports Illustrated continued her history-making streak last week when it made her the first Little Leaguer to score the national cover of its magazine.
