THE CITY DIDNT LISTEN THE FIRST TIME! NOW YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO VOTE AGAIN! We are asking you to VOTE YES on Nov. 4th to STOP THE BEACH PROJECT BECAUSE: • HIGH COST, MARGINAL BENEFIT: Taxpayers responsible for millions in replenishment costs with zero protection for 90% of the community and minimal, if any, protection for the beach block. • OUR BULKHEADS = REAL PROTECTION: Dunes, unlike bulkheads, will wash away in major storms. Many shore communities to the north, which suffered extensive damage during Superstorm Sandy, didn’t have bulkheads. • THE REAL PROBLEM IS FROM THE BAY: Only 2 of 994 Sandy related building permits were for beachfront homes. Clean-up costs were $3.1 million city wide, and only $360,000 for the beach block. Not all beachfronts are the same up and down the Jersey Shore. Different problems call for different solutions…not some one-size-fits-all template. • IT’S UGLY AND UNSANITARY: Our wide, beautiful beaches will be a thing of the past and the useable portion of the beach will be greatly diminished. Pooling storm water strewn with trash will accumulate behind the dune, which you will be walking through to get to the beach in front of the dune. Unsightly outfall pipes will spill storm water into our surf. • IT LIMITS ACCESS: A 7 ft. high, 100 ft. wide wall of sand will make access far more difficult, especially for parents with young children, the elderly and disabled. • NO FLOOD INSURANCE RATING INCREASE IF WE DON’T JOIN: Our flood insurance rating is the lowest in coastal N.J. per the city of Margate, it will not increase if we don’t join. • SAFETY AND SECURITY COMPROMISED: Many people love to walk the beach or play in the surf in the early morning or end of the day. Safety will be an issue as they will no longer visible to anyone on the street side of the dunes. UNKOWNS: • WILL GOVERNMENT FUNDING BE AVAILABLE FOR RE-NOURISHMENT? If not, the costs could be $125 mil. over 50 yrs. • MANY UPFRONT COST ISSUES, including the cost of obtaining easements, drainage and extension of the Margate Pier? • THE ESTIMATED COSTS for providing security, cleaning and maintenance for both sides of the dune as compared to our current open beach? • WILL THE COMMISSION STAND BEHIND THE VOICES OF THE MARGATE THIS TIME?
