THE COMPASSION OF JESUS "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD" Luke 4:18-19 From beginning to end an important part of the ministry of Jesus was His compassionate healing miracles on the sick and afflicted: "the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them" (Luke 7:22). In Matthew 20:34 Jesus had compassion on two blind men and healed them. In Mark 5:1-20 Jesus cast many demons out of a hopeless and helpless man. In Luke 7:11-17 Jesus interrupted a funeral procession to raise a young man from the dead. He presented him alive to his weeping widowed mother. In Mark 9:14-27 Jesus had compassion on a demon-possessed boy who was brought to Jesus by his father. Jesus also had compassion on hungry people. Once He fed five thousand people with a few fish and loaves (Mark 6:34-44). Somewhat later He fed four thousand people in a similar way (Mark 8:1-9). The greatest act of compassion was His giving of his life for us on the cross (John 15:13). The death of Jesus was no ordinary death. He died for the people of the world (John 3:16). He died in our place that our sins might be forgiven (I Corinthians 15:3). He died that we might be made fit to receive the Holy Spirit. He died for us that we might live eternally with Him and His Father in His Heavenly Kingdom.
