THE CORNER STORE - In the early 1950s my family lived on the 1900 block of LaSalle Street. Back then, every neighborhood had a local, family owned grocery store. These stores were the mainstay of many of these neighborhoods. The photo below is the one in my neighborhood and was known as The Corner Store. The store was owned and operated by Bud (Roland) and Helen LaVassor and was located on the southeast corner of LaSalle and English Streets. Bud and Helen had three children, Roger, Diane and Ricky. The LaVassors lived upstairs above the store. I remember going to the store as a small child with my mother or grandmother to pick up groceries. It was always a treat because these trips always meant I could get a couple of pieces of penny candy or maybe an ice cream bar out the freezer. My family moved out of the neighborhood in the mid 1950s and to my knowledge I never return to The Corner Store after that or saw Bud or Helen or Roger, Diane or Ricky again, but my recollection of that store is still vivid in my mind and is a cherished memory. Most, if not all, of these stores are now gone and when my generation is no longer around, the memories of these stores and the role they played in the lives of the many families that lived in the neighborhood will be forgotten. That is too bad. Maybe is we had more Corner Stores and more family oriented neighborhoods, things in this country would be a lot different and maybe more like they were back then.
