THE CURTAIN FALLS ON ANOTHER SMASHING SEASON. It was a very touching moment last night at Presentation Evening seeing Terry Rooke and Mick Stainton attending to present their own Handicap Cups. These two gents have each been involved for the last 35 years and more. Many thanks lads. For too long we have only honoured our great supporters when its too late. The committee are looking at ways to rectify this. We have spoken of the 3 Individual Cups bearing players names, actual divisions bearing players names etc. and we will pass on our thoughts very shortly. There were a few exceptional performances this season. The biggest one in my personal opinion was Dar Copperwheat leading the Vic lads to their third Premiership Championship against a host of really good teams. This really is a remarkable achievement so very well done lads. A. Myers and D. Waudby also reached the Premiership Pairs final for the Cows.. Another highlight of the season was the outstandingly consistent matchplay from John Turner of Packet Sambas. Even our most decorated Individual Title winner, Antony Myers is quick to praise him. Turner won the Supreme Championship, Premiership King of Kings, Premiership Masters Title, Golf Championship and was runner-up in Premiership Topgun. What a man! We are lucky to have such a good player among our ranks with so much modesty. Those from outside the city limits didnt do too bad for cash and trophies this season. Charlotte Hunt superbly won the Ladies Title for Bowmans in Howden. Gaz Yates took both the Div One Individuals and partnered Dave Stevens to the Div. One Pairs. He was also narrowly beaten in the final of the Div One Masters. Bowmans Braves also got their entry refunded for finishing third in this Division and were beaten finalists in the Mick Stainton Cup. Jack Robinson did really well to reach the Div One Individuals final. Boardwalk Boys won the Div. One Promotion Cup and were beaten finalist in the Terry Rooke Cup. No wonder Howden is so prosperous. They take all our money! Swinefleet had both finalists in the Div Two pairs in A. Pennistone, C. Bradwell, M. Collins and S. Lenz. Ship Sharks thoroughly deserved their £100 for winning Div. Two. Not to be outdone Norman Clarkson at Swinefleet Club also pocketed 100 notes for The Fleets victory in Division One. So can we expect a variation on the Pool Food Menu, Norman? Rawcliffe maintained their proud record of winning with the very popular (I dont know why) Phil Cowling lifting the Captains Cup and the very, very popular Roly Curley a beaten finalist in the Over 50s. Old Goole scored for a few quid and trophies thanks to some great performances. Steve Purvis proved to everyone he is definately one of the best local players by winning his way to his second Supreme Individuals Final where John Turner had to be at his very best to win. This lovely lad is underestimated by some - but not the top lads who all know how good he really is. Rennie Calvert was beaten finalist in both the Premiership Masters and the Captains Cup. (stay away from the Humber Bridge pal) Keith Tooke did himself proud to reach the final of the Div Two Individuals while the Verms John Barrett was beaten finalist in the Div Two Topgun. Marsh Mellows also won the Mick Stainton Cup in a dramatic match with Bowmans which was very competitive to say the least. Des Lancaster had a memorable win in the final of the Premiership Topgun for Woodlands Rawneks. Having lost to JT two weeks earlier in the Premiership King of Kings he dug really deep to clinch this title in a very nervy winner takes all last frame of the match. (best match I saw all season) Woodlands added to their many riches thanks to Andy Merrill and Dave Hunt proving they really are the best Premiership Scotch Pairs players in town. (without a doubt!) Tony Hill won the Division One King of Kings from his team mate Troy Oldridge (for the second time. in 3 seasons) and Tony and Steve Collins got to the Div One Pairs final. (and played pretty poorly on the day if I remember rightly) Martin Thomson (as you will all have heard from him) retained his Over 50s Crown and should be barred. Woodlands Rawneks under Wilfs leadership played strongly all season but could only claim second spot in the Premiership Rat Race. Cricket Club Bats scored for quite a bit of dosh and silverware with £60 for brilliantly finishing second in Division Two and £50 for Ben Lamb lifting Div 2 Individuals title. So the posh end of town was well catered for. Peacock Magicians had too many tricks up their sleeve for Charter Cheddars although both teams played very well in the Division Two Promotion Cup Final. Last but not least of my memorable moments involves the Packet Army. I cant remember who plays for which blooming team but there is a few bob floating around the pub tonight. Packed Out are future Premiership Champions if they maintain their improvement and maybe argue a bit less among themselves. A truly great season lads. Well done. Emma Longster narrowly lost in the final of the Ladies Individuals. Chris Pollard is too good a player for Div One and needs to be in the top flight. He played magnificently to win the Div One Masters and Div One Topgun Titles. He was also influential in Steaming Packets Terry Rooke Cup victory and them finishing second in the league. Good captaincy from Damo Theaker. Brandon Stannard won the GPL Pool Charity Cup with some excellent play and showed his all round class by lifting our first ever Poker Championship.(another JT in the making perhaps. Good at everything!) Young Jordan King continues to improve. Every time I have seen him play he gets more confident. He got his just reward when lifting the Div Two King of Kings Trophy in a great final with another Packet star, Steve Dearing who played so well in that tournament. Packet also dominated the Under 21s by having the two finalists. It was a shame that only one could win and Josh Buck proved best on the night in a tight victory over Kieran Smith. On the subject of young players - is this going to be the season another star is born. Can our young guns end the dominance of Turner, Purvis, Myers, Copperwheat, Calvert, Yates, Buck, Pollard, Lancaster, Jackson etc. etc. in the Supreme Individuals Championship. Its ok beating these lads over one frame in the league but you must be able to do it over 5 or 7 frames. Is there someone out there that has that ability. That would really make this season interesting. We must thank Adi Turner of Unique Paints for his support along with our website sponsors Glews, our local Vauxhall Peugeot dealer and Steam Packet Public House. Many thanks to our Landlords who support us even though they are experiencing a very difficult time themselves. A special Thanks to John and Diane whose unconditional help has been invaluable to us all this season. There will be other events that I have forgotten but overall 20 teams out of our 36 members won cash and trophies but lets not forget its not all about winning. Every team is important to us. I know sometimes when our judgements go against you it is frustrating but please remember we do not make the rules. Your elected captains make the rules and the committee are there to ensure your rules are followed and obeyed to the letter in every instance. All of our registered players must be thanked for the continued generosity and backing as we all rallied together to try and rebuild the league. The committee themselves dont need or wish to be thanked. Great nights like Presentation Evenings when we all gather to honour our champions gives the committee the best thank you possible. Good Luck to all our teams this incoming season and lets hope all 36 of you get a little something at our next Presentation Evening at Charter Club on Friday 27th March. The last league matches are played on Wednesday 18th March and the Play-Offs will all take place on Wednesday 25th March. Once again (if you havent fell asleep reading this) Good Luck Everyone and thanks for another exciting season. From all your Committee.
