THE Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mariam Aloma Muhktar, will, this morning, swear in 16 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), at the Supreme Court. This is just as the Supreme Court will, also this morning, commenced a new legal year, after resuming from its annual vacation. The ceremony, which will take place at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja, will mark the beginning of a new calendar year, after the justices of the apex court had resumed from their annual vacation. It will be recalled that the apex court had, on August 27, for the first time in the history of the judiciary, cut short its vacation to hear the Ondo State guber appeals. Confirming this, the media assistant to the CJN, Ahurakah Isah, told the Nigerian Tribune in a telephone conversation that the ceremonies would take place simultaneously at the Supreme Court complex and would be presided over by the CJN. The new silk were appointed in July, having passed the interview conducted for the applicants by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC). Among the new SANs to be sworn in are Adele Eberechi,Olumide Sofowora, Olufunke Aboyade, Uko Udom, Anthony Ani, Godwin Obla, Suraj Sa’eda, Anthony Anaenugwu and Joe Abrahams. Others are Akinlolu Kehinde, Biriyai Dambo, Chukwuma-Machukwu Eme, Olalekan Yusuf, Moyosore Onigbanjo, Aliyu Abdullahi and Victoria Awomolo. The only academic who made the list is Professor Lawrence Atsegbua of the Faculty of Law, University of Benin. Similarly, the Federal High Court will, this morning, commence it annual judges’ conference in Lokoja, Kogi State. The conference, which marks the beginning of a new legal year of the court, is to be presided over by the Chief Judge of the court, Justice Ibrahim Auta.
