THE DAILY CUP - 5/20/2014 Praying for Rain I know we are all praying for rain. We must not stop. But we must also pray with the bigger picture in mind. In the biblical scenario, physical drought is often depicted as the consequence of spiritual drought. Amos laments a famine of the Word (Amos 8:11). So I am praying for spiritual rain! The latter rain of the Holy Spirit that comes at the sincere repentance of Gods people. Here is a staggering thought -- in the Bible, it is the RIGHTEOUS WHO cry out to God in repentance. They feel a solidarity with all the people, with the entire nation, and they weep and repent in behalf of the people. Look at Daniels pray in Daniel 9:3 and following. You could not have found a more righteous man on the earth, but here he is confessing the sins of his nation WE have sinned and done wrong and turned aside from thy commandments. You see the same thing in Nehemiah. Hear the prayer I pray before thee day and night for the people of Israel thy servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against Thee. Yes, I and my fathers house have sinned (Nehemiah 1:6). Again, it is a righteous man praying, confessing the sins of an unrighteous nation, as though they were HIS SINS TOO! You see? I dont think we are doing that! I dont think the people of God are crying out to God for his mercy like we should. And if we dont care enough about it to do it, how can we expect lost people to care about it?!
