THE DAILY SUN AL men involved in Ramu violence: Khaleda Image Staff Correspondent CHITTAGONG: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia alleged that the Awami League government is not bringing to book the real criminals involved in arson attacks and vandalism of Buddhist temples and houses at Ramu, because it is the ruling party men who carried out the attack. Some of the attackers were also seen with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when she visited Ramu, Khaleda said, adding that even the government did not form any judicial commission to investigate the incident to find out the real culprits. The former prime minister made the allegations while exchanging views with the Buddhists and Hindus affected in such attacks at Patiya on September 30, at Chittagong Circuit House on her way back to Dhaka from Coxs Bazar on Sunday evening. Many of the temples could have been saved if the local administration had taken prompt action to contain the violence that began on the September 29 night, Khaleda observed and accused the government of its failure to save temples and properties of peace-loving Buddhist community. Temples were also set on fire at Ukhiya in Coxs Bazar even in the presence of the home minister on September 30, she resented. Khaleda also resented the fact that the government did not renovate or reconstruct the damaged temples although over one month has elapsed since the violence. She called for immediate reconstruction of the temples and reiterated the demand for a judicial probe into the attacks. Even though the Awami League claims itself to be a non-communal party, it is causing harm to all religious communities, Khaleda said, adding that the party has grabbed lands of many Hindus and caused harm to Muslims as well as Buddhist and Christians. Life and religion of people are not safe during the rule of this government, she said. Urged the government to create level-playing field for all to participate in the national election, Khaleda said that they would not accept any election under any political government. Dipananda Bhikkhu, principal of Ratnangkur Buddhist Monastery and Dharmananda Bhikkhu of Lakhera Abhoy Buddhist Monastery spoke at the meeting, among others. Earlier, the BNP chairperson visited Buddhist and Hindu temples at Patiya upazila in Chittagong. She donated Tk 4 lakh to each of the two damaged Buddhist temples and Tk 2 lakh to each of the two Hindu temples.
