THE DANCE OF THE LIGHTNING BUGS What a wonderful time of the year in Oregon County The air would be full of what we called lightning bugs, flickering their light on their tails on and off. (Some folks who lived in town called them fire flies). We did many things with them, but the most fun we boys had with them was fun that mom and dad enjoyed also. They would even stay up after dark to see the show. It was just as exciting as the forth of July now days. Mom and dad would set in the rocking chairs as us boys went to each side of the house and caught lightning bugs. You could pull the tail off when it was lite and it would stay lite. Each boy would catch the lightning bugs and rub them on his body where he wanted it. We would only have on cut off blue jeans and the rest of the body would be bare. The lighted tail attached to the body very easily and would stay in place. Each one of us would decorate ourselves with a different Indian fashion. No copying was allowed, we had to look different. My favorite was a light band across the forehead, one stripe up each outer leg, a string of bead lights around the neck and chest decorated. Some of my brothers would go the monster look and have lights around the eyes, down the nose and around the chin and rib lights. No matter which way you went, you had to put on a show for mom and dad setting on the porch. The ones with the monster look would also have each finger and toes lined with lights and walk around in a monster fashion. I would go as the Indian because I could do an Indian dance. Mom and dad seem to enjoy the show because they would be in bed by now unless it was a church night. The lightning bugs never seem to stay around long enough for us boys.
