THE DELTA © Mike Lee People speak of beauty of the sea coasts and the mountains, but to me that which is beautiful is here, out in the delta. Mississippi is a state of contrasts. We’ve a sea coast, but great farm land and we’re bordered by the Mississippi and its river bed – which forms the delta – a great beauty all its own. The levee keeps the river in the channel and the land between it and the bluffs is called the delta and it’s rich for growing crops. It’s here that farmers plant and harvest cotton, corn and kale; grow rice, soybeans and pond-fed catfish. It’s an agriculture rich, diverse, and valuable for both our state and for our people. It is here the ‘blues’ was born – where highway 61 became so famous – where men sang the songs that were the south because they came from those men’s hearts. It’s here that wildlife finds a home, millions of birds migrate from far up north all down the flyway, and it’s here you’ll find the true south and its’ people who’ve defined us from the start. We’re Mississippi – we’re the delta folk – our heritage is in the soil, the fields, the levee and the river. We’re the strength, the blood, the old south still alive and well. We are the delta and without us there would be no south, no Mississippi. We’re, by definition, southern through and through.
