THE DUTIES OF THE CONSECRATED PERSONS According to St Pope John Paul II in his apostolic exhortation “Vita Consecrata”, “The Consecrated Life, deeply rooted in the example and teaching of Christ the Lord, is a gift of God the Father to his Church through the Holy Spirit”. As such consecrated persons are in perpetual communion with the Church through prayers and contemplation, helping out in the ecclesial mission to sanctify, educate and evangelize the world. Though Monks and Nuns do not leave the Monasteries where they pray and work, the Religious, Friars, and those of the Apostolic and Secular Orders do engage in missions outside their convents and friary. No matter where the consecrated persons may find themselves as pastoral and religious workers, teachers, medical doctors or nurses, lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc., they are to carry out their mission with commitment to holiness, charity, generosity and skilled professionalism in such a way that the truth about the person of Jesus Christ may enlighten the growth of the young generations and the entire community. The consecrated persons must never forget that the first and foremost calling is to be consecrated to the Lord. Other works or professionalism though important, are secondary to their calling.
