THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM THE STORY World leaders are taking a Euro trip this week. And, since everyone is mad at each other, it’s the most awkward thing ever. First stop is Brussels for the G7 summit — then they’re off to France for the D-Day anniversary. WHAT’S THE G7? Normally, a group of central bankers and finance ministers from seven countries that gets together to chat about the global economy. This time, a clique of seven heads of state. It was supposed to be a G8 meeting in Russia, but then Ukraine happened. Everybody changed their RSVP to “Decline,” their flights to Brussels, and the group name to ‘G8 Minus 1.’ I KNOW WHAT D-DAY IS, BUT LET’S JUST REVIEW. It was the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany during WWII. Think: opening scene of “Saving Private Ryan.” Friday is the 70th anniversary of that day. BACK TO THE TRIP. WHY SO AWKWARD? After the G7 is done gossiping about Russia, everybody’s going to France to have dinner with Russian President Putin. Except French President Hollande is actually hosting TWO dinners so President Obama and Putin don’t have to try to make small talk. Bonus awkwardness: yesterday Germany announced that it’s investigating the NSA’s alleged phone tapping of German Chancellor Merkel. Could someone please pass the bread now? The *: Putin continued to woo everyone when he spoke about Former Sec. of State Hillz and decided it was a good idea to say “Maybe weakness is not the worst quality for a woman.” Oy. GUEST SKIMM: Paul Pierce, Brooklyn Nets It’s Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The Heat is on. Literally. The Miami Heat will face off against the San Antonio Spurs tonight. We talked to Paul Pierce, small forward for the Brooklyn Nets. His nickname is “The Truth” for a reason. Catch the game on ABC at 9PM ET. WHAT ARE THE NBA FINALS? An all-out, no holds barred, showcase of some of the best basketball you will ever see. These two teams have played 82 regular season games and three rounds of playoff games for the chance to win the NBA Championship. SOUNDS GOOD. WHO’S PLAYING? NBA Finals deja vu. The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs will again fight for the trophy. The Heat took it home last year. ANY BIG UPSETS TO GET HERE? Not really. San Antonio had the best record in the league and the Heat are reigning champs…although Brooklyn Nets! gave them a run for their money. What happens from here on out is anyone’s guess. WHO IS REALLY UNDER PRESSURE? Miami’s famous trio (LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade) promised 7+ rings when they joined the team in 2010. That’s a lot to live up to. The core of the Spurs has been around for a long time and they’d like one more title for good measure. WHEN IS IT OVER? When one of the teams gets four wins. WHO ARE THE TWO PLAYERS I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT? LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on the Heat. The Spurs veteran core will look to reigning three-point champion Marco Belinelli to bring some offensive fuel off the bench.
