THE END OF AN ERA: Honestly this is just a little bit sad and I cant help but feel a strong wave of nostalgia coming on. So, for the very first time in 50 years the American Broadcast Television will cease running Saturday Morning Cartoons. That means no more kids waking up at ungodly hours on saturday mornings, rushing to seat in front of the TV…. with their bowls of cereal (thank you very much)…. still wearing their PJs in order to watch the Cartoon shows theyve waited for so patiently all week long. It is true that you have entire channels devoted to animation these days but they are on Cable television and unfortunately not all families can afford a hefty cable bill. Broadcast Television allowed children from low-income families to have access to the same childrens programming than their counterparts from more affluent backgrounds. In fact, watching the Saturday Morning Cartoons was a shared experience that often animated our conversations on monday morning as we all went back to school. I cant help but feel that in some ways this is the end of an era and the beginning of another. In a way, what we are witnessing today is the relentless attack on all public institutions which usually help create a level playing field for all. Today, on Cable Television you have 500+ highly specialized channels at your fingertips to choose from, you can stream shows to your hearts content on your laptop or your shiny new iPhone or you can read the latest bestseller on your ebook reader. There is no longer any need to live by the stringent rules of scheduled content, you can watch TV on demand, DVR your favourite shows for future viewing or stream them on Netflix. Yes, the world is full of choices and options all of which are unfortunately incumbent on whether you can AFFORD them or not. With public libraries shutting down at alarming rates, after school programs being underfunded and ultimately cancelled and the public school system being dismantled, I cant help but think that the cancellation of the Saturday Morning Cartoons on Broadcast Television is yet another sign of just how much class in America (and unfortunately more and more in Canada) tints nowadays our very experience of childhood. So, for all the countless hours of pure fun and enjoyment I spent watching dutifully these cartoons, I would like to offer a finale salute to this shared experience known as the SATURDAY MORNING CARTOON….On with the show, this is it. https://youtube/watch?v=F-t8PngHgWY
