THE EPITOME OF EFFICIENCY My wife was thrilled about the upscale restaurant that she talked me into taking her. I must say that place was running exceptionally well on that particular night. The server keyed our order into a hand held computer and it was transmitted directly to the kitchen or bar. He explained that efficiency consultants had advised them that the device would speed service, allow them to serve more guests in less time, thereby increasing corporate profits. As my wife reached for her spoon to stir her tea she dropped it on the floor. Almost immediately the server reached into his shirt pocket and produced another spoon.When I inquired about it, he pointed out that every server had one because the efficiency consultant determined that 29% of the guests would ask for a spoon during their visit. He went on to explain how many man hours that saved in a years time. I began to think that my wife had made a good choice when I saw a string hanging from the waiters fly. I discreetly told him. He smiled and pointed out that every waiter had a string. I said, let me guess. The efficiency consultant? He smiled and explained that waiters used the restroom three times per shift. He said that not only did the task use time but creating the need to wash ones hands used even more time, water, soap and towels. By tying a string around it you can pull it out and pee without touching it. This negates the need to wash your hands, saving time and money. I said I can see how you can take it out with the string but how do you put it back in? He looked at my wife the leaned and whispered to me I really dont know about everyone else, but I use the spoon.
