THE EVIL OF COMPASSION by John Hibbert Beautiful, sweet compassion! To be moved by the needs of another; to empathise with the burdens and heartaches of the people; to see the multitudes and ache to help them, to reach out a hand, inspired by love, to pull a soul to safety! Except I be moved with compassion, how can I claim that the love of God abides in me? This is the compassion of Christ. This is the compassion that touches the leper, is always available, and is never off duty. When we live and move and have our being in Him, this is the love that burns in our hearts and drives us to rescue dying souls. So what do I mean, “The Evil of Compassion?” I mean that there are times when our compassion can blind our eyes to the larger picture, when our compassion fails to see the serpent in the grass, when giving the kiss of peace to an enemy can imbibe poison into the system. The scriptures that tell us to show compassion, also instruct us to mark those who cause division, beware of those who creep in unawares to destroy the flock and not to chase after those who tread underfoot the blood of the everlasting covenant. Knowledge without wisdom is a potential holocaust and compassion without a harness is a destructive force. Compassion that is not flowing from the fountain of divine love, controlled by spiritual insight and wisdom, is a force for evil rather than good.
