THE EXCELLENCE OF OBSERVING THE FAST OF ASHURA 1251. Narrated Ibn - TopicsExpress

THE EXCELLENCE OF OBSERVING THE FAST OF ASHURA 1251. Narrated Ibn Abbas(ARA): Allah`s Messenger(SAAW0 observed saum (fasting) on the day of Ashura and commanded us to fast on this day. (Al- Bukhari and Muslim). Commentary: Ashura is the 10th of Muharram. In another hadith, it is stated that when the prophet(SAAW) emigrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah, he saw that the Jews were fasting on this day. He asked them why they did this on that day, and they told him that they did it for the reason that Allah granted Prophet Musa (AS) emancipation from Pharoah on this day, and so they observed fasting in token of their joy. On this, he (SAAW) said that in this happiness of Prophet Musa(AS), Muslims have a greater right to observe fasting than the Jews. Consequently, he also observed fasting on the 10th of Muharram. Then, he said that if he lived the following year, he would observe fasting on the 9th of Muharram also, so that they would make themselves different from the Jews. According to yet another hadith, he(SAAW) ordered the muslims to observe fasting on Ashura, and in addition one more day of fast coinciding on the 9th or the 11th of Muharram, in opposition of the Jews. (Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4, p. 21, edited by Ahmad Shakir, and Mujamma` Az-Zawaid, vol. 3, p. 188). Thus, observance of two days of fast on this occasion is a sunnah of the prophet(SAAW) These two days can be observed either on the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th of Muharram. It is regrettable indeed that present-day muslims do not follow the sunnah of the Prophet(SAAW) and instead observe the baseless practices of mourning assemblies (majalis), which is a grave sin practiced by the shia groups. 1252. Narrated Abu Qatada(ARA): Allah`s Messenger(SAAW) was asked about observing as-saum (fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, `It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year.` (Muslim) **It is notable that when the fast of Ashura was first realized, the prophet (SAAW) ordered his companions and followers to observe this fast (i.e. it was mandatory or obligatory) at that time. Then, when the revelation for the obligatory fast of Ramadhan was revealed, the fast of Ashura was left as a voluntary fast. Yet the benefits of this fast are many, so as to entice the people towards doing good and fasting for this occasion. If only for the benefit of having followed the sunnah practice of the beloved prophet(SAAW). Taken from: Riyadh-us-Saliheen, v.2, p. 959-960, #1251, 1252.
