THE F.G. AND ASUUs STANDOFF: WHICH WAY TO RESOLVE THE CRISES AND REACH MUTUALLY ACCEPTABLE AGREEMENT? (3) BY ABBATI BAKO, psc Strategies for Negotiation Stakeholders/Relationship Daniel Dana observes that,’ abstinence from communication is the essence of conflict, without doubt, no resolution is possible without communication ’ so the most important point is to make tentative timetable for negotiation with ASUU and FG but must be under the mediation of some NGOs. Also some influential leaders especially from traditional leaders, business community and religious leaders could be involved; may give assistance in finding a lasting solution to the dispute. Negotiation in a nutshell. Mediation and negotiation experts assert that, it is important to look into relationship while going into negotiation. In view of that, we are to observe five styles of negotiation-; I --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- S Competition Problem solving S avoid U compromise E ----------------- (Solution) Yield ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Relationship Other issues to be looked into in negotiation include;- People-------------------relationship------------value-----------history----------leadership //////////////////problem////////-----information//////////----issues//////////----distributive justice Trust--------process------structure---------fairness------resources In negotiation and mediation, it is always imperative to turn negative into positive, which can only be possible by making proper diagnosis in any dispute or differences. The FG must try to build trust with ASUU by respecting their value, people/students, history and leadership. Also, ASUU must as well do same things for the FG by always observing their responsibility on citizens, history, value, culture, interest and leadership. The only way to attain this is by solving the problem through negotiation and mediation process by putting a structure of fairness and distributive justice. Both side must consider;- Separate evaluation / / 1. Separation / 2. Legitimacy / 3. Honesty / 4. Realistic commitment / 5. Responsibility Wishing the best for the two sides and looking forward to resolve the dispute ASAP---(as soon as possible).
