THE FAKE ONE HIT WONDER It was the week of December 6th, 1969 when the fictional group Steam started a two week run at number one on the Billboard singles chart with “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”. The story behind this sing-a-long one hit wonder is rather amazing. In early 1969, Gary DeCarlo and his former band members recorded a song they thought would be a big hit. They also recorded what they thought would be the throwaway flip side, a song they had written in 1961 called Kiss Him Goodbye. The song was very short so they lengthened it with a repetitive chorus of na na na na, na na na na, hey hey, goodbye. Nobody believed that song was worth anything and since they didn’t want have their names on it, the song was attributed to a non-existent band that they named Steam. What happened next surprised DeCarlo and everybody. A disc jockey in Georgia played that throwaway flip side on the radio and the request lines lit up like a Christmas tree. Sales of Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye have now exceeded seven million records.
