THE FIFTY PERCENTLESS POLITICIAN EYES GHANAS PRESIDENCY FOR THE FOURTH TIME IN SIXTEEN YEARS the much-awaited announcement of presidential intent by nana akufo addo has been made and it is without any ambiguities.nana says he will pick forms to contest for the npp presidential primary if it is opened later in the year.well, there is no denial of the fact that he is indeed one of the powerful forces in the npp in contemporary times having led them to the last two presidential elections.even though he lost in those bids to the ndc.this is the fourth time he will be seeking to be the npps presidential candidate.of the previous three attempts,he won two and lost one to the most successful leader of their tradition ie john agyekum kufuor in those1998 in sunyani.he won the last two in 2007 and 2010 with alan kyerematen as his closest antagonist. nana addo has proven time and again that he is not presidential election winning candidate.he has lost his bid in the the last two elections with a retrogressive fortune.in ghana, anybody who has won the presidential election after at least two attempts has gotten a progressive fight towards the office.no dwindling fortunes in terms of the percentage of votes acquired.he got forty nine percent in 2008 and the figure came down to forty seven percent in 2012.lets take a careful look at the history of some presidential elections in ghana and how the candidates fared. 1996 presidential election: *jerry john rawlings had 4,099,758 votes representing 57% *john agyekum kufuor had 2,834,878 representing 39% 2000 presidential election: *John agyekum kufuor had 3,131,739 representing 48% in round one and 3,631,263 in the run off representing 56% *john evans attah mills had 2,895,575 representing 44% in round one and 2,750,124 representing 43% in the run off 2004 presidential election: *john agyekum kufuor had 4,524,074 votes representing 52% *john evans attah mills had 3,850,368 votes representing 44% 2008 presidential election: *nana akufo addo had 4,159,439 votes representing 49.13% in round one and 4,480,446 votes representing 44.77%in the run off *john mills had 4,056,634 votes representing 47.92% in round one and how4,521,032 representing 50.23% in the run off 2012 presidential election: *john mahama had 5,574,761 votes representing 50.70% *nana akufo addo had 5,248,898 votes represening 47% DEDUCTIONS FROM THE ABOVE HISTORICAL PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS: *both john kufuor and atta mills who became presidents in ghana improved on their performance on at least in the round one results in subsequent election(s) significantly *both john kufuor atta mills never defeated incumbents on reelection bids apart from the above statistics that is massively against nana addo, there are other strong factors that will also prove to be his nemesis in the 2016 election should he emerge the npps presidential candidate.these are facts that cannot be contested by anybody who respects facts.this includes the following: *no sitting president has lost on reelection bid *no third timer has won contesting a sitting president *no candidate with a dwindling or eroding presidential election fortunes has event become president in ghana in at least the current fourth republican dispensation. *president mills who won after three attempts was never seventy two years during his third time of asking there are some internal factors and happenings in the rank and file of the npp that can go against nana addos candidacy.these are what i call self inflicted challenges which will definitely ruin the fortunes of the npp.amongst them are as follows: *the unfair treatment being metted out to some dissenting voices in the party who are not pro nana addo ie wireko brobbey, kofi konadu apraku, arthur k.kennedy *the declaration of support to nana addo by some party elected executives is also unfair and those who feel orphaned by these activities of some party elected executives will definitely think twice and advice themselves accordingly i believe the npp will be digging their own grave if nana addo is presented to ghanaians in the 2016 election.but because of his popularity in the party,i foresee him winning the internal npp presidential contest.
