THE FUTURE FOR OAMARU IS GREY (HEADED) As an Oamaru person, do the population figures published in the ODT story today worry you? We already have one of the most age-heavy populations in the country and its going to get even more so. At present, 22 percent of Oamarus population is over 65 — the national average is 14 percent. Is that good, or bad for the vitality of the town? But by 2030 that will reach a whopping 35 percent. Five years ago, when I arrived here, Mayor Alex Familton caused a bit of an uproar when he suggested that Oamarus future could well be as a retirement town. One of the greatest issues that we would face is jobs-with-a-future for young people. We probably already have that to a degree.
