THE Fiji Labour Party appears to be at deaths door after its miserable performance in the 2014 General Election. Beaten by its nemesis, the National Federation Party and the debutante Peoples Democratic Party, Labour will have no members of Parliament for the first time since 1987. Labour did so badly that its highest polling candidate, Dr Rohit Kishore, polled less votes than Independent Roshika Deo who took 1054. Voting trends show that Labours Indo-Fijian support has swung virtually en masse to Frank Bainimaramas Fiji First. Now the knives are out in the Labour camp as members recognise the opportunity to destroy leader Mahendra Chaudhry. Dr Kishore has openly blamed Chaudhry for the partys poor showing and linked this to his arrogant leadership style and conviction on exchange control crimes. Chaudhry is unlikely to give up leadership without a fight and that final, internal battle, will most likely rip the party apart, confining it to the dustbin of Fijis political history.
