THE GIRL You know what that means, right? The girl. Like, not the girl you crushed on for a little while in eighth grade, but the girl. The one that never left you from the start, from the day you first met her; the girl that, and this is probably unfair to her, but, the one that makes you feel like, you, or at least a better you. She inspires you to do all the right things, makes you do the right things—‘cause that’s it, as long as you’re living with her in mind, it’s gotta be the right thing. Which is why it hurts so much when she’s not there, living without her. Then it feels like going down the wrong path, further away from her, wrong. And I guess that’s the heart of it, what makes her the girl—that as complicated as life can be sometimes, she simplifies it: When she’s there, it’s okay; and when she’s not, it’s doing everything you can to be near her again. At least, that’s all you’ll ever want. Does that make sense?” “Yes. But why?” “‘Cause it’s you. For me anyway, for as long as I’ve known you, you’ve been the girl.”
