THE GOLDBERG VARIATIONS 1. My college girlfriend betrayed me (this was many years ago) with a guy we all recognized from a distance at our huge, urban school. He was very cool, we thought, us college boys and girls, and she went and slept with him. I came to bring her something she needed from my apartment to one of her classes and there she sat with him, holding hands. I took the moral high ground and spoke harshly. He cringed. She came outside with me for a moment for whatever it was she wanted and seemed ashamed. 2, I knew she had betrayed me accidentally. I happened to the apartment of an acquaintance to fetch something, a borrowed book, I think, and he said, “O, a girl you know was here last night. She was with my friend.” I don’t know what he thought or knew about the girl and me. The only other conversation I had ever had with him was when he tried to explain his graduate study to me: He was not a musician, but he was writing about Bach And claiming he had made discoveries in the music. I didn’t understand his ideas. When I understood who “the girl” was, I felt a blade in my heart. 3. She rode a nasty bus across the ghetto To say she was sorry. “Why did you do it?” I asked her. “Lust,” she said. In that twilight moment, out on Potrero Hill, the lights of the Mission Valley-- --constellations sweeping beyond my dark windows— I loved this candid, intelligent girl, having lost her forever. 4. In my beautiful apartment I leaned close over the radio whenever they played Miles and whenever they played Bach. https://youtube/watch?v=--WOImiq7TQ
