THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014) is the eighth film by Wes Anderson and the first one I couldve finished by watching one of his other movies. The chief reason to see it is the production design by Adam Stockhausen (with set decoration by Anna Pinnock). Anderson filmed at Studio Babelsberg in Germany and though the sets arent majestic in the award winning sense, theyre massive and theatrical and delightful and give the prepubescent filmmaker his biggest electric train set to play with yet. The casting of Ralph Fiennes is amazing as well; this is the actors first lead role since THE CONSTANT GARDENER in 2005 and was an unconventional choice to anchor a frantic farce, but hes great. Anderson hurtles the viewer past props and miniature effects and sets and famous actors in makeup and costume so quickly that much of the laughter for me was more nervous than genuine. Its as if Anderson knew if he stopped for a second, the absence of a story or anything to say would sink the film. It stays buoyant, but it wore out my nerves.
