THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 2015 - Part Two HYPE. Its everywhere! Remember the headlines in the Daily Banner News each September? Concerning the Columbia County Fair and Livestock Show? Bigger and Better Than Ever! What a bunch of bunk. The Fair was a much-anticipated event while growing up, much like Easter break, Christmas, the last day of school and Halloween… the lights, the rides, cotton candy, bingo… It was about the only time a kid read the newspaper, except maybe for the Christmas edition which printed the letters to Santa. Wed grab the paper out of our fathers hands, risking a swift slap across the face, just to read those important words, Bigger and Better Than Ever! The ONLY thing that ever got bigger about the fair was the number of contestants in the Columbia County Fair Queen Contest, the line of cars trying to get into the parking area, the higher prices for a spin on the Ferris Wheel and the number of cows in the sale barn. Better? Hmm, maybe the fact that Gladys Jean Ogden Dalrymple stopped trying to win the blue ribbon for her cucumber preserves that were about as tasty as a soggy piece of rope! It was all about hype and the ability to make you think you were getting something you didnt. Thats whats happening to the Great Blizzard of 2015. Yes, I know that a foot of snow would be monumentally catastrophic if it fell in Magnolia or anywhere else in the south. A foot of snow in New York is like… Oh well, whats for dinner? Apparently, Im going to have to drive northeast to Boston to get what we thought we were going to get. And aint it just like Mother Nature to fool you? Remember that margarine commercial? Its not nice to fool Mother Nature. Who cares about whether its nice or not? Mother Nature has fooled all of us for generations. Rained-out homecomings, scorched-out garden parties, iced-out Christmas travel, you name it. Trying to plan around the weather is like contemplating the path across the field to that good fishing spot. Your freezers running low on crappie but Bubba Earls black angus bull may be in the mood for a good charge. Of course the only bad thing about not getting a blizzard is the media retraction… and that is about as insignificant as cucumber preserves. As I look out the window of the hotel, the snow has stopped except for a few flakes here and there, the sky is only partly covered with clouds and the streets are more wet than frozen. Yes, its still 16 degrees and the wind is blowing like a banshee, but it looks like the worst is now over and that taxi ride to the airport wont be a dizzying, carnival ride through the streets… well, possibly. Soon Ill be beating my feet on the concrete streets of Nashville and the Great Blizzard of 2015 will be as old news as the Daily Banner News Fair Edition.
