THE HAUNTED HILL An Edgecombe County plantation owner - TopicsExpress

THE HAUNTED HILL An Edgecombe County plantation owner could not bear to see any of his slaves loafing in the fields. He told his slaves that when he died he was going to be buried on a beautiful knoll overlooking his fields where he could keep an eye on them through eternity. After his death, his superstitious slaves labored hard in the fields because they knew the old man was keeping a haunting eye on them. Some years later a well-known Tarboro doctor was hunting quail in the fields with his top dog, which was reputed to be one of the best hunting dogs anywhere. A covey of quail was flushed, and some of the quail flew up to the knoll where the old slave-owner was buried. The dog raced to the knoll and went on one of his finest points. Suddenly the dog, who was never known to break a point, tucked his tail between his legs and, howling at the top of his lungs, ran away from the knoll and disappeared into the woods. The doctor retraced his steps to his buggy and went home, where he found his dog, quivering and shaking, hiding under a building. Other hunters have had the same experience with well-trained hunting dogs. The hunters say that even to this day no dog will hunt near the knoll in Edgecombe County; the dogs begin to bark and snarl and will not hold a point. Others say that the dogs can see the old man sitting on the knoll keeping a watchful eye on his fields.
