THE HEART OF A TRUE LEADER by John Hibbert Posted on May 22, 2014 True leadership is based in love for the people you lead. A leader who truly loves his or her people will always put them first. William Wilberforce, one of the greatest parliamentarians of all time persistently refused high office, because he was in politics to do a job; to bring about the abolition of slavery. The people he desired to set free were more important to him than personal ambition or the advancement of his own career. If only we had just a few politicians like this today, instead of the self-seeking, career orientated men and women who rule our nation. But all this applies to the leadership of churches. Where are the men and women who put people (whether inside or outside the church) before themselves? Where are the men like Moses who said “Blot my name out of your book” rather than see judgement fall on the people? Or men like Paul who said, “I could wish myself accursed for my brethren?” Or like John the Baptist who was ready to decrease that He might increase? Where are the leaders with the Spirit of Christ, who made Himself of no reputation and humbled Himself to the death of the cross to save the people? True leaders are not concerned with ‘protecting their patch’ or being high up the success table. They are not too proud to seek advice or listen to correction. True leaders don’t work between certain hours and try and make money out of helping people. They are not interested in status, position, or wanting to be somebody. They seek no prestige amongst men. They are humble servants of Jesus Christ who are prepared to spend their last breath in the cause of rescuing souls for the One who died for them. They are true leaders, because they are shepherds!
