THE HIGH PRIEST OF BOP Thelonious Sphere Monk, pianist, composer, and musical architect of the highest order, was born on this day, October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, NC. Monk, dubbed “the High Priest of Bop,” along with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell were the major stylistic innovators who ushered in the “bop” or “bebop” movement in jazz in the mid 1940’s. His composition that have become part of the jazz standard repertory include, Ruby My Dear, Straight No Chaser, and Round Midnight.
