THE HORSE BLANKET! A storekeeper in Alabama was a devout Baptist, and had the habit of quoting scripture after every sale. People would gather in the store just to watch him transact business and listen to what he had to say. One day, a little girl came in to buy some candy, and as he rang up the sale, he said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me.” Later, a man came in to buy a Christmas present for his Dad, and as the sale was completed, the store owner said, “Honor thy Father and thy Mother.” Shortly thereafter, a large dual cab pickup pulling a 55-foot horse trailer pulled up in front of the store, and a finely dressed gentleman stepped out of the truck and walked into the store. He asked for a horse blanket. The shopkeeper went into the back room, picked up a horse blanket, and came back to where his customer was waiting. “That’ll be $5,” he said. “Oh, no,” said the customer. “This is a world champion horse I have out here. I could never insult him by getting him a $5 horse blanket. Find me something better.” Now the shopkeeper only had one kind of horse blanket, albeit in different colors. So he went back into the back room, picked up another blanket and walked to the front of the store. “We have this one for $25,” he told the customer. “You really don’t get it, do you?” protested the customer. “This is a world champion horse. I paid over $1 million for this horse. I am not going to put a cheap horse blanket on him. What else have you got?” So the storekeeper returned to the back of the store, picked up another color of the same horse blanket, and walked back to the front of the store. “That will be $200” he told the man. “Well, finally!” said the customer, and he paid for the blanket and left. Everyone in the room listened to hear what the storeowner would say next. He looked heavenward, as if waiting for inspiration. Then he smiled and said, “For I was a stranger, and you took me in.”
